Remote control helicopters are a passion for me. This site was started as a way for me to be able to share my thoughts and RC helicopter guides. It is also an outlet for my HTML, PHP and Java "skills". A Physicist by profession, i am definitely no expert when it comes to model helicopters. I do however enjoy the heli hobby very much, and would like to share my ideas, views and guides with everyone, in the hope of being able to help my fellow modelers. I like to think i keep myself up-to-date with the helicopter hobby world, i have added a blog to let me share any relevant RC helicopter news stories with you.
RC helicopters are very engaging, they provide many hours of fun, from the initial building of the kit and flying, to tinkering and experimentation of the model helicopter. They are also very diverse. The hobby has numerous branches of specialization. These include aerial photography, scale flight, 3D flight, F3C competitions and scale turbine powered models
Whilst the hobby can be quite daunting for the amateur, the model helicopter community as a whole is a very supportive one. Its understandable to be put off by the price and technical considerations. A RC helicopter simulator is also a worthwhile investment to get your fingers used to the movements required. But these factors will be paid back ten-fold in hours and hours of immense fun.

The engineering is as much of a passion for me as the flying, so I'm happy to offer my building skills to the community
I encourage anyone starting out in the hobby to become a member of one of the many on-line forums. The two i most strongly encourage you to take a look at are RcHeliAddict and HeliFreak. They have many thousands of members, so if you cant find an answer here, go and ask it on one of those forums.

When i was first starting out in the heli world, one thing that i found very difficult was a good tail setup on my RC helicopter. How much of this was caused by my choice of a "cheap" gyro is unclear. But a good tutorial is definitely a must when setting up your first tail.

A good mechanical setup on the rotor head of a remote control helicopter, can be the difference between a model that almost flies itself, or one that is destined to hit the ground at high speed. OK, so they might be two extremes, but time invested now will be paid back ten fold.

Sometimes you will get lucky, and have perfectly balanced blades out of the packet. the same goes for tracking, you may not need to track your blades at all. Either way you should defiantly follow this procedure to make sure they are operating correctly.

| T-Rex 500 Electrostatic |
Any tail belt driven RC helicopter has the possibility of generating a spark from the rear tail unit to the main frame/electronics. Usually not a problem, but with certain combinations of helicopter/electronics it can cause problems with radio equipment. Particularly the T-Rex 500 and Spektrum receivers. We will explore the options to counter act this issue.

These useful devices are not only designed for Aerial Photography, but also for learning to fly, or other position critical applications. They range from simple optical/thermal devices to keep the helicopter level, up to GPS controlled, altitude stabilized units. Whilst some will keep the helicopter level as stated previously, these cannot control the altitude or drift of the helicopter. Advanced devices incorporating GPS, pressure sensors and accelerometers, can keep a stable position to within a few tens of cm's.
